Does anyone have tips for effective copywriting? The code ensures that your website functions well. The design sets a mood conducive to the business at hand. Then, copywriting must close the sale.
Here are some of the effective copywriting strategies I use:
- Make every statement as short as possible. Consumers have a short attention span, and internet browsers take that to a new level.
- Use active verbs. Scan your copy for forms of the verb "be" (e.g. are, is, was, were, am). These verbs lack impact and put speed bumps in the rhythm of your copy. Rack your brain trying to reorganize sentences with passive verbs in a way that will make room for an active verb.
- Provide larger, bolder headings for new thoughts. This allows users to quickly scan your text and skip paragraphs that may not contain the information they want. However, word your headers as teasers. The headers should make the paragraph below irresistible. When you can do so without interfering with the effectiveness of your text, put your keywords in your headers. Search engines have been reported to give extra significance to keywords when they are bold or larger than the body text.
- Test your copy. Internet marketing lets you test your copy like never before. It's almost free to put up different pages with the same intent but with different copy. Track the effectiveness of each page to learn what copy persuades your target audience best.
- Lead with your lead. Don't bury your lead. When you have a body of copy, read it and pick out the most important and persuasive statement. In most cases, this statement should lead your copy. If you have this statement in the middle or bottom of the page, this is what journalists call burying your lead.
- Make it easy for users to do what you wanted them to do as soon as they want to do it. Don't make them click to another page to take action when you can put the appropriate form at the bottom of the page with the sales pitch. Don't make them scroll though paragraphs of text to sign up for your newsletter, if they decide to sign-up after reading the first two sentences. Give them a sign-up box on the side at the top and bottom of the page.
- Remember that people are more likely to read your text if it is large and easy to read. Funky fonts and small font sizes exhaust readers and make them want to move on to the next pretty picture.
