OK, so I'm kind of recycling an idea I've had before, and which has been done on another forum I used to frequent, but bear with me.
I thought it'd be a good idea to have a topic listing all the good webmaster related resources people know, such as tutorials, articles, editors and scripts. Basically, post any useful webmaster related stuff you know in here, and I'll edit this post with your resources and such. I decided this was the best place for it as it covers more than just design or development... Here goes nothing... Site design articles & tutorials: A List Apart: Lots of tutorials and articles on web design and development covering XHTML, CSS, writing, presentation and other subjects... Very useful. Development tools & IDE's: Aptana: Eclipse based IDE and AJAX specific server tools supporting JavaScript, XHTML, CSS, Ruby on Rails, PHP, iPhone development and Adobe AIR development. HTML-Kit: HTML-Kit is a fairly decent Windows based code editor that handles more than just HTML. It also integrates with Tidy, meaning it can fix and clean your code, making it pretty :] jEdit: A highly customizable Java based code editor for OS X, Windows, Linux and Unix that supports a range of languages including PHP and Ruby on Rails (with additional plugins). Not without a few minor niggles, but it's fast for a Java based app. SCIte: A small editor built with the scintilla highlighting package (it was originally a demo app for them). Useful for quick edits as it's more of a NotePad on speed than a full blown IDE. Graphics apps: Xara Xtreme for Linux: Xara decided to open source their vector graphics tool for Linux, OS X and Unix users, which was great news for people like me (I don't use Windows). It hasn't been updated recently, but I've had no problems with the current version... A Windows version that's more complete (because it's not being ported from another OS) is available, but it's commercial rather than open source (everyon'e got to eat). The GIMP: Call it the poor mans Photoshop if you must, but some people don't want to throw massive wads of cash at people for photo editors... Me, I use vector editors anyway! Scripts and stuff: TinyMCE 3.x branch: TinyMCE is a web based WYSIWYG editor for use in applications such as content management systems. TinyMCE 3 aims to be XHTML compliant, meaning it shouldn't generate utter garbage like most visual editors do. So far, I haven't managed to create invalid code using it (3.0rc2), though it still doesn't do pretty formatting as standard. Wordpress: Yes, you know what it is, where to get it, what it does and why it does it, but everyone still loves it, especially since it's longest standing rival is Movable Type, which is owned by Six Apart (UGH!) and which needs both Perl and PHP to function fully (MT is built in Perl, but needs PHP for some of it's page management features while Wordpress is just built in PHP). Typo: Typo is a free blogging CMS built with Rails (yes the screenshots are in French, it's because the developers are from France). Not to be mistaken for Typo3 which is a PHP based CMS. Beast: Beast (do not type forum for the love of all that is holy!) is a small and lightweight Rails based web forum that is being developed by the guys behind the popular Rails blog engine Mephisto (yes, they use the names of Marvel characters for their apps and version names). Post your stuff! I'll add more categories as needed.

Skills: XHTML, CSS, MySQL, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Object Pascal, code validation & more... Tip: Refactoring: Making code cleaner and easier to read through, making editing easier in the future (giving variables and functions meaningful names, extracting common blocks of code, and creating a wrapper to DRY up code and properly commenting code). Obfustication: Making code more complex and harder to read without damaging the functionality of the application (usually a form of protection against reverse engineering and code theft as encrypting may not be an option). Evil genius since 1985... Or 1802 if you count the week my plan to alter history backfired. |
