Be sure to use the Competitive Ad Filter to block useless sites. I block ebay since their ads are always useless crap and I also block any sites that are not about the subjects on my site. If your page is about famous quotations, you don't want a bunch of insurance quote ads.
Although pages like the ones below can help in deciding where to put your ads, I have found that ad placement is a lot like fishing. Your favorite spot can dry up and you have to try different areas. Where should I place Google ads on my pages? Beyond the Click: Which online ads are the most effective? (Part 1) Beyond the Click: Which online ads are the most effective? When my CTR goes down I like to change it up. Maybe change colors to give it a different look than my visitors are used to. Move the ads to a different spot. If you are getting a lot of repeat visitors they will need to see something different. Once I change it it seems to pick up again. My blogs I don't have to change it too much they still do alright.

If your CTR is down, you should check wether or not your visitors came from other places. When you get 75% of your visitors trough Search Engines, the most visitors come to your site, searching for something. Those visitors are more likely to click ads then your regular visitors.
Suddenly you get a link from a well visited site, tech savy, who are looking for info, and not for ads. Those visitors don't click your ads => CTR down. First find out if the change in CTR is permanent. If not, don't change anything. If the change is permanent, try tweaking your ad-placement more. |
